Sadie pulled a piece of fabric over the plank edging the wooden dais where the ‘Snow Queen’ would be crowned tomorrow, her mouth turning down as she heard it rip. “Damn it.”

“Careful, friend.” Petunia’s soft hands brushed hers away and Sadie watched as she applied a small strip of tape before pulling the material into place.

“Thanks.”

Petunia smiled, throwing an arm around her shoulders. “Cheer up, sister, it’s almost Christmas. A time for miracles.”

“A miracle is what it’d take to get what I want for Christmas.” Sadie had spent the last two days crying on Petunia’s shoulder. After he’d made the most exquisite love to her, Cooper had vanished, spending long nights at work as a way to avoid her. And she knew way.

Everyone in Troubled Peaks, Alaska, knew that when Cooper Landry mated, he’d mate with a pure-blooded reindeer shifter. To carry on the line.

She’d been fooling herself in thinking that what they’d experienced together would chang a damn thing.

She told herself not to cry. She’d gone to his bed—eagerly gone to his bed—knowing it would be nothing more than a pleasant interlude for both of them. Heck, she had no desire to tie herself down with a man who had such antiquated ideas about love and mating.

Petunia boxed up the remaining fabric and threw the tape on top. “I told you, you’ve hooked him. Now you just have to do is reel him in.”

Sadie snorted. She wasn’t sure she had the proper equipment to reel in a fish—or reindeer—as big as Cooper or that he even wanted to be caught. At least not by a coyote shifter. She’d thought making love with him would open his eyes to the fact that it was love that mattered—not being of same shifter species. Apparently, she’d miscalculated his determination to keep his family line pure.

Moving the box to one arm, Petunia hooked the other through Sadie’s. She hated that her friend was so miserable, especially when things were going so well for her and Denver. If she’d read the signs correctly, she’d be married before the New Year. The fact that Sadie had been so happy for her when she’d imparted the news only made her feel even more guilty that her friend was hurting. Darn Cooper’s stubborn hide. She had half a mind to give him a good talking to. But that could embarrass Sadie, and she was in enough pain.

“Come on, let’s go put this stuff away and call it a day. After the pageant tomorrow, we’ll be free women.”

Sadie felt a pang in her chest at Petunia’s words but refused to wallow in any more self-pity. If Cooper could let her go so easily, then his feelings for her couldn’t run that deep.

We felt his love in every touch.

Shushing her inner animal, she looked around in awe at the transformation that had taken place in the little park over the last week. The stage and judges booth, decorated in layers of white lace and glitter, trimmed with red bows, looked like something out of a movie scene.
